Caffeine as a protection to skin cancer.

Previous studies have suggested that the caffeine could offer some protection of skin cancer and the new research may explain why.
“We have found what we believe it is the mechanism by which the caffeine is associated with decrease of skin cancer,” said the principal researcher Dr. Paul Nghiem, an associate professor of dermatology at the University of Washington in Seattle.
For the study, Nghiem the team studied the effect of caffeine in the cells of the human skin in a laboratory that had been exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Found that the cells damaged by the UV rays, the caffeine interrupted a protein called ATR-Chk1, causing the damage to the cells self-destruction.
“The caffeine has no effect on the cells in good condition,” said Nghiem.
ATR is essential for the damaged cells that are growing rapidly, said Nghiem and caffeine is specifically directed to the damaged cells, which can become cancerous.

“International Day of Pure Air”

Today, 19 November 2009, we welcome the “International Day of Pure Air” established by the World Organization for the Health in 1997 and which annually celebrates the third Thursday of November at world level, under the billions of people exposed to the environmental pollution affecting the health, ecosystems and the weather condition of our planet.
One of the resources more important is the air we breathe daily, and that, despite being a common good, it is becoming less pure, since that human beings we have polluted our environment with different types of gases and substances that negatively affect the quality of air.
Some of the factors that contribute to environmental pollution are: the smog caused by the combustion of all kinds of vehicles, the pollution of the gases of waste of industries, the gases emitted in the decomposition of the wastes that are in landfills to open air, the burning of plastics and garbage, and especially the smoking.
The objective of this commemoration is generating awareness in the community and encourage smokers to refrain from smoking for 24 hours, mainly in public spaces closed, respecting the right of those who do not wish to do so and that are seriously harmed by the smoke of smokers.
